Location Description:

Chavez Canyon Ranch is located in Lincoln County, New Mexico approximately 28 miles east of Ruidoso, NM on US Hwy 70 and 380 and 1 mile north of Hondo, NM.

Terrain:

The ranch is located in the Sacramento Mountains with elevations of 5300 feet to 6200 feet. The Chavez Canyon is the canyon leading from the Hondo Valley up to the New Mexico hideouts for many old time outlaws. Over seven miles of Baca Spring Creek traverses the ranch flowing NW to SE. The entire ranch is mountainous and extremely scenic. Areas of good bottomland to sloping hills can be found along the creek and down bottoms. The north boundary of the ranch is the Lincoln National Forest. Tree cover is consisting of ponderosa pine, pinion pine and juniper. Grass cover is of native varieties. This scenic mountain mecca has been under a long-term ownership of ABC News personality Sam Donaldson who has personally and actively operated this ranch for profit and personal enjoyment for many years.

Water:

Water is provided by 2 generator powered house wells, 2 generator powered livestock wells, 3 solar powered wells and one 500 foot well with 60 GPM production. This well irrigates an alfalfa field for Elk and deer. Water storage includes 6 large enclosed storage reservoirs and 2 large open reservoirs plus numerous livestock drinking tubs.

Improvements:

Ranch Improvements: Headquarters’ compound - Improvements includes a nice managers home, barn/shop, storage rooms and an open equipment shed. There is a set if steel constructed cattle corrals with branding chute for cows and calves. Also included is an equine round pen, livestock loading chute and a fenced garden area.

Owners Compound – The main home is a sizeable southwest adobe styled structure. This very nice home has been the host of many of Mr. Sam Donaldson’s celebrity friends over the years. The main home is complimented by three southwest styled guest houses similar to the main ranch home. In addition there are 2 underground water well houses, tennis court, wading pool with circulating pumps and a waterfall as well as standby propane generator for electrical power. The area is landscaped by ponderosa pines, 2 transplanted aspen groves and more.

Recreation:

The ranch supports a good number of elk (permits issued) and mule deer. Other activities can include off road driving trails and just a few miles up road is Ruidoso New Mexico. A summer and winter destination with horse racing, skiing, casinos, golf, and a beautiful mountain setting.

The Donaldson Chavez Canyon Ranch has been loved, operated by, and cared for 29 years, and the time has come for Sam Donaldson to hang up his spurs.
